This week we ate gingerbread man cookies.  We colored in the parts we ate.

We switched reading group teachers.

We had brunch for lunch and pizza this week.

Some of us finished our weaving in Art.

This week we started to read different versions of the Gingerbread Man to compare what is the same and what is different.

One reading group is learning to write a research paper.

In computer we did coding.

In math we are using number bonds to make Fact Families.

We filled Mrs. Wilcox's bucket many times.

This week we got to watch The Peanuts on the Mayflower.

In PE we did basketball.  We dribbled the ball.  We shuffled down the court and passed the ball.  We pretended there was a buffalo coming after us to practice defense.

In math we are doing number bonds for subtraction.

This week we did Language Arts.  We did a lot of reading and writing.

In Social Studies we are learning about the Mayflower.

We got a new student on Monday.

We had shorter days all week because of Parent-Teacher Conferences.

This week in Art we painted owls.

We had fun with Mrs. Wilcox.  In science we watched a video about people fossil hunting.

We had reading groups.  We are reading a lot of books!  One group read about Puppy Trouble.

In Spanish we brought in pictures of loved ones on Day of the Dead.

This  week we had reading groups.  Two groups read about cats in the shack.  If we are not in reading group, we are writing in our journals.

We had Art.  We worked with clay.

We are going to have Multi-age this afternoon.

Last week Theo Martey came to teach us about African drumming.  We got to use the drums.

We learned that dinosaur nests kept the eggs warm, protected, and moist.

This week we continued working on number bonds in math.

We made dinosaurs and put them in the periods they lived in.   All dinosaurs lived in the Mesozoic Period.  The Mesozoic Period is broken into the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous Periods.  We also learned that the Earth is made of layers.  Then we learned that the dinosaurs lived in the different periods because of the layer they were found in.

We published out first piece of writing for the world to see.

This week we learned a new game on the iPads called Spanish Smash.

We got a day assigned to use the iPad.

We are learning about dinosaurs.  We learned people brought the bones (fossils) to the Montshire to look at.  We also learned about Pangea.  Pangea is what the world looked like a long time ago!

We started reading groups this week.  When we were not in reading groups, we did our journal and worked on spelling with Mrs. Geoghegan.

This week we started reading groups.

In math we used cube trains to help us count and compare numbers.

In science we drew pictures of things from nature.

In Guidance we made creations from nature.

We had a bus drill.  We got to jump out the back of the bus.

We had fun with Mrs. Wilcox.  (The class filled her bucket!)

This week we finished reading My Father's Dragon.  The chapter on the lion was a good part.  Some people liked when the boy gave the crocodiles lollipops.  The boy gave the monkeys magnifying glasses to find the fleas on the gorilla.  At the end,  the crocodiles carried the animals down the river.  Some liked the part when the boars tried to find the invasion.  We liked when he rescued the dragon.  We liked that book.

In math we did counting.  It was fun to count out loud.

We had centers this week. We like using iPads.  We liked listening to Skippy John Jones.

This week we finished Owls in the Family.  Wol liked to ride on the handlebars of Billy's bike.  Weeps liked to sit in the crate on the back of the bike.  Wol also bit Mutt's nose and tail in the story.

We started a new math unit on money.

In Morning Meeting, we gave flowers to the teachers that are leaving the Lyme School.  The first grade got to move to the second grade spot.

This week we had May Pole celebration (or June Pole).

In Owls in the Family they now have 2 owls.  Wol likes to tease the family dog, Mutt.  Weeps does not believe he can do anything, including flying.    Billy tried to teach Weeps to fly by throwing him off the garage roof, but he still wouldn't fly.  Wol did learn to fly.

This week we started a new read aloud, Owls in the Family.  The family adopted an orphan owl.  It is funny!  There are many things that take place that we should NEVER do in real life!

We are learning about maps.    Maps are smaller than the actual area.  We drew maps.

Some children got their eyes tested by the nurse.

We have a new Author of the Month, Mo Willems.  We are reading a lot of his books!  Everybody in class can read his books by themselves!

This week we finished Charlotte's Web.  We watched the movie this week.

It was HOT and SUNNY most of the week.

We had our last 4 Winds.  We caught frogs, a baby turtle, tadpoles, salamanders, some exoskeletons of  crayfish.  Some of the salamanders were fighting and mating.  We found out salamanders eat tadpoles.

This week we performed "We Got the Whole Globe in Our Hands".

We are almost done with Charlottes's Web.  The family, Wilbur, Charlotte, and Templeton went to the fair. Wilbur won a ribbon and fainted on stage.

We started a new unit in math.  We are comparing lengths.

This week we are practicing our song about continents to perform for the school.

We are still reading Charlotte's Web .   The family is just leaving  for the fair.  The sheep convinced Templeton, the rat, to go to the fair.

We are working on a new Spanish story.

The third and fourth grade performed a play about Cinco de Mayo.

Our May STEM project this month is to invent a new use for a pencil.

This week we started studying maps.  We sang a song to learn the names of the continents..."We've got the whole globe in our hands...."

This week in Charlottes' Web Charlotte worked on saving Wilbur by weaving "Some Pig" in her web.  Also earlier the goose had babies but one did not hatch.  Templeton kept the  rotten egg and Avery fell on it and it smelled SO BAD!

The prizes for the Passports to Winter Fun were passed out today.

We started writing narratives.

This week we learned new Spanish words.  They are sports words.

We made bird houses.  They will be displayed at the Dowd's Inn.

We are in the middle of the read aloud Charlotte's Web.

We had our Student-led conferences.  Some students were nervous at first. The students read from reading group books, a favorite math page, a writing journal page, taught their parents how to do add strategies, reviewed how they were doing with their Hope & Dream, and shared which rule they did best.  Most enjoyed doing the conference.

This week we tried to keep ice from melting.  It was our second attempt.  We tried it again so we could improve on our first try.  The last piece of ice melted 27 hours and 19 minutes later.  The group wrapped the ice cube in felt, then newspaper.  They placed it in a cup surrounded by sand and put it outside under a bush. We will finish the unit on States of Matter today.

We finished Gooney Bird Greene.  Many students liked the part when Gooney Bird's cat was consumed by a cow.  Others liked her dangly diamond earrings.  Our new read aloud book is Charlotte's Web.

Three students already did their student-led conference.  The rest of the class will do them next week.

This week we studied what a gas is. It can change shape.  It takes up space. Gas is all around us.  We also observed how long it took to let an ice cube melt.  It took 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Today we will try to make an ice cube melt faster than 1 1/2 hours.

This week we adopted Gator and Howie, the manatees.

While reading Gooney Bird Greene, Gooney Bird climbs in the rug after her cat.  The rug fell out of the car.  She did not get her cat back, but she did get back to her parents.

We explored liquids this week.  Liquids can change shape to fit the container, but the volume (amount) stays the same.

In math we are making 10, then adding the leftovers (ones).

This week we started a new science unit, States of Matter.  We explored solids this week.

We have new math unit. We are learning about addition and subtraction to 20.

We started a new read aloud book called Gooney Bird Greene.  She likes to be right smack in the middle of everything.

Over the last 2 weeks we had guests readers come in to celebrate Dr. Seuss.  Last week we made hats, played with Ooblek, and planted "truffle" trees for Read Across America Week.  We also ate green eggs.

Our new STEM challenge this month is to make rainbows with a flashlight and a jar of water or a CD.

We earned enough money from extra chores to adopt Gator, the manatee.

We are still studying manatees.  Manatees can hold their breath for 15-20 minutes but usually come up for air every 3-5  minutes.

We are working on place value of the teen numbers in math.

This week we finished Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle.  We started a new book called My Father's Dragon.

Thursday was our 100 th day of school!

We started learning about manatees.  They are related to elephants.  They are endangered.  Their only predator is a human.  They get hit by boat propellers.  Manatees do not have front teeth.  They only have molars.  When one falls out, the molars move forward and then they grow a new one in the back.

This week we are finishing our study of the moon phases.  We made craters in the moon.  We finished recording in our moon journals.

We are still reading Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle.  Some of us loved the chapter about the slow-eater-tiny-bite taker.  Others liked the radish cure to get kids to take a bath.  Some more students liked the one about the selfishness cure.  We just started one about kids who quarrel.

We are writing so much now- and quickly!  Some students like writing in their journals.

Many of us are recording in our Winter Passports.

One reading group finished Mummies in the Morning.  Jack and Annie saw a mummy!  The group got to write in hieroglyphs on papyrus they made.

Another reading group finished reading Owl and the Moon. Owl thinks about so many sad things he makes himself cry.  He collects the tears to make a kettle of tear-water tea and it is salty!

This week we had spirit day and we had to wear purple! We got pencils for prizes.

We are finishing up with the moon unit.  We discovered the moon phases is a pattern in nature.   The moon waxes and wanes every month.

We started a new math unit.  It is about first and last (Mrs. Wilcox says it is called ordinal numbers and position.)

We published our favorite opinion pieces.

This week we are studying the moon.  It is smaller than the earth (maybe the size of a tennis ball to the size of a globe for earth and the size of the school for the sun). Copernicus is a special crater on the moon.  There is an American flag on the moon.  It has wires in it to make it look like it is flying because it has no wind.  We finished reading Midnight on the Moon by Mary Pope Osborne.

If students didn't ski, they made dinosaur launchers.

This week we started the ski program.  About 17 out of 22 first graders are skiing.
** It was awesome!  (... but MD felt icy)
**It was good.  My groups went on the chair lift.
**We went down Herman's Highway and MD.
**Many of us saw our teacher at the lodge picking up her daughter.
